We began our Aboriginal Head Start (AHS) program officially on February 14th, 2005 at the newly named site of Waweniwin Learning Centre (WLC) in Moosonee, Ontario. Aboriginal Head Start is a Canada-wide program that offers Indigenous preschool, at no charge, for children and their families. Below are the six components that make up our program.

At the Centre you will see a wide variety of open-ended play materials in loosely defined play spaces to support children’s exploration and inquiry. On any day, you may see your child learning through play; modelling with Playdough, hand painting, or playing at the sensory table. You may also notice them singing during circle time, practicing their Cree language skills at story time, or intently doing a craft or coloring that is related to the
seasonal themes, numbers 1-10, or learning their colors. You may also notice them learning different physical and social skills while playing outside.

We build on the Cree language and culture through teachings, song, dance, drumming and storytelling either in the classroom or out on Mother Earth. We build on the Cree language and culture with the help of our Elders/Cree Language teacher. They will teach the children traditional greetings, animal names, themes, seasons, and spoken words, through storytelling, songs, pictures, and repetition. The Centre has an on-site cook tent for traditional cleaning, cutting and cooking of wild game, and making and cooking bannock over the open fire. As well, it is used for demonstrations of snaring of rabbits, and the stretching of pelts.

Our families or primary care givers are made aware of what resources are available to them locally and social service agencies' mandates and contact information that could greatly improve their quality of life. By their own inquiries, we can also search or help them to find information pertinent to their families through the world wide web.
